The History
History is at the heart of Sparth House. The first record of a dwelling on this site dates back to 1455, with the main house constructed in 1740. Over nearly six centuries, the property has been home to many families, including the Cunliffe family, whose story is woven into local heritage. Robert Cunliffe, the first Member of Parliament for East Lancashire, left the house to his daughter Jennet in 1653. Jennet’s romance with John Grimshaw, a Catholic man she married despite strong opposition, is often described as the house’s own Romeo and Juliet moment. In the years that followed, Sparth House evolved through periods of renovation, including work by John Lomax in 1836, before later becoming an antiques house and eventually a hotel. Much of its character has been carefully preserved, with pieces such as the furniture in Room 22 originating from the sister ship to the Titanic, the RMS Olympic.
Today, Sparth House is owned and run by a family supported by a dedicated team who share a deep pride in the property and its place in so many wedding stories. Continued refurbishment and thoughtful improvements reflect our commitment to keeping this historic home welcoming for generations to come.
Sparth House brings together heritage, hospitality and a complete focus on weddings, creating a setting where celebrations truly feel like your own.
